Protecting yourself from cyber crime

We have recently been contacted by a number of clients who have been targeted by online and telephone scams.

In order to protect your monies, private information and personal identity we have listed below some steps you can take to avoid these scams.

1) Protect personal information

  • Be alert of fake emails. Don't respond to any email that advises that your account will be closed if you don't act quickly. This often occurs with fake bank emails.
  • Don't respond to emails asking for personal information, when in doubt contact the company by phone.
  • Don't click on links in emails from companies or people that you don't recognise.
  • Be alert of telephone scams that ask for your personal details or credit card details. Again don't provide information to callers that ask for immediate payment.

2) Passwords

  • Create passwords that include using upper and lower case, special characters and avoid using family names or date of births.
  • Try not to use the same password for all sites, in particular consider using unique passwords for online banking sites.
  • Consider changing passwords regularly .

3) Check your statements

  • Regularly check your bank, credit card and investments statements
